Vertebral Subluxation

Subluxation

A vertebral subluxation is a diminished state of being, comprising a state of reduced coherence, altered biomechanical function, altered neurological function, and altered adaptability. This is different than a “luxation,” which is the complete dislocation of a joint. When subluxated, the joint surfaces are not completely separated but are misaligned.  Subluxation can occur in various joints in the body, including the spine.

These partial dislocations in the spine can lead to a variety of health problems by interfering with the nervous system. Some of the common symptoms include pain and swelling around the subluxated joint, sensations of instability, limited mobility or loss of range of motion, loss of feeling or numbness, and bruising.

Vertebral subluxation can occur as a result of poor posture, repetitive daily movements, or trauma to the spine due to a fall or severe blow. It commonly occurs as a result of direct contact during sports or physical activity. It can also occur after someone suffers a stroke, as muscles are weakened and joint movement is reduced.
